10 hallway storage ideas to keep your entryway tidy

If your home is anything like mine, the hallway is where things get chucked as soon as you walk through the door… coats, keys, post, umbrellas, shoes. At the same time, your hallway is the first impression to your home, so providing proper storage is important to keep uncluttered. So, here’s 10 storage ideas to keep your hallway tidy.

1. Enclosed shoe storage

One of the first things to clutter up a hallway is discarded shoes. They start to build up wherever they’re kicked off leading to a pile of unsightly shoes as soon as you walk in through the door.

There are plenty of slim shoe storage options out there which not only provide somewhere to put the shoes, but a surface to put keys, letters and other bits on.

2. Under stair cupboards

Underneath the stairs can be a neglected bit of space, and provides an opportunity for taller storage for larger things like coats, umbrellas, and even bikes if you’re lucky to enough room.

Depending on how bespoke you want to go, you could simply add some framing and doors, or go a bit more complex with pull out drawers and shelves.

3. Wardrobes

If you’re not keen on under stairs built-ins or they’re not an option for you, a slim wardrobe can be a good alternative for storing taller objects and coats.

Since they’re bulky bits of furniture, I’d recommend painting them the same colour as the wall, and if they’re in a corner, investing in having a carpenter make them look built-in for a more streamlined look.

4. Built-in benches with pegs

It’s often useful to have benches in a hallway, especially if you have young children who need help putting shoes on.

Benches can double up as storage - lift the top and chuck in whatever you need. Using the wall above a bench for hanging storage and additional shelves help you to use the entire height of the wall.

5. Floating drawers

Floating furniture is a great solution for when your space is small or narrow. If you live in a smaller home or one with a very narrow hallway, a floating shelf or drawers will give you a surface and a small bit of enclosed storage, without crowding the floor.

6. Console and baskets

Baskets are a great catch-all, chuck your umbrella and shoes in there and they’re out of site. Adding one per family member is a nice touch, and centering them beneath a console table creates a nice styled area in your hallway.

7. Ottoman storage

This is a similar solution to the bench, but less of an investment and a bit more flexible. Ottomans aren’t just for the living room - if you add one to your hallway it’ll become a place to sit and put shoes on whilst also giving you some enclosed storage.

8. Mounted pegs

This is another good option for more narrow hallways - making use of the walls without adding bulky furniture.

A peg rail gives you space to hang up coats, jackets, umbrellas and bags. You can also hang baskets on pegs to add smaller items.

9. Sideboard

If you’ve got a slightly wider hallway, then adding a large sideboard will give you plenty of storage for different sized items. The shelves inside can be used for shoe storage, with the drawers used for smaller things.

10. Concealed doors

Finally, who doesn’t love a secret built-in element in a home? If you have the space, blending a seamless door into your wall will give a minimalist look - you could try this underneath the stairs or into a cupboard.
